Slippin’ Away

Slippin’ Away is the 1st song of a number that I’m working on. I wrote the lyrics while caring for my mum who sadly has developed dementia. It’s been clear for a couple of years that her memory and cognition were slowly failing and it’s become all too evident in recent months. Hopefully the lyrics say it all.

She’s distressed and adrift
Every thought now a gift
Not long back she was bright
She was doing alright
Now she’s spiraling down
Towards uncertain ground
She’s slippin’ away
I don’t know what to say

CHORUS
She gave me life
She gave me breath
She gave me thought
She gave me all I am
Now she’s over the edge
And slippin’ away
I don’t know what to do
I don’t know what to say

Today she was lost
Once again her mind tossed
Uncertain in thought
Drowning, distraught
It’s so hard to have heart
While she’s falling apart
So I sit and I wait
And I trust it to fate

CHORUS
She gave me life
She gave me breath
She gave me thought
She gave me all I am
Now she’s over the edge
And slippin’ away
I don’t know what to do
I don’t know what to say

So day follows day
As it takes her away
Piece by piece
Step by step
And I dread
What comes next

She gave me life
She gave me breath
She gave me thought
She gave me all I am
